For the third year in a row, the George Washington University (GW) Psychiatry Residency Program has partnered with Fairfax Mental Health to provide low-fee mental health services to current college students in the Northern Virginia communities. Roy Stefanik, D.O., assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and physician at Fairfax Mental Health, provides on-site clinical supervision to senior residents for this clinic.
"We are excited to continue this partnership and to take an active part in addressing the mental health needs of our communities," said Eindra Khin Khin, M.D., director of the Psychiatry Residency Program and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
According to the National Alliance on Mental illness (NAMI), nearly 75 percent of mental health conditions emerge by age 24, and many of these issues arise during college. Despite the high prevalence of mental health issues in the college student population, only 55 percent of 2012 NAMI survey respondents said they had access to mental health services and support at their college.
